With over thirty published books, Ann is Queen of the Castle to her wonderful husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.
From a young age she’s been fascinated by myths and fairytales, and the romance that often was the center of the story. As Ann grew older and her hormones kicked in, she discovered trashy romance novels. Great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.
Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and has accepted that her Muse has a severe case of ADD.
Ann loves to talk with her fans, as long as they realize she’s weird and that sarcasm doesn’t translate well via text.
Rhiannon Mirga, known as Goddess at Club Wicked, has a reputation for being a beautiful and unapproachable ice princess. But beneath her hard exterior beats the tender heart of a submissive who yearns for a Master’s love despite a nightmare past that makes it hard for her to trust anyone. For Rhiannon there are only two men that can help her overcome her fear, the club’s incredibly sexy trainers, Master Rory and Master Liam.
Unfortunately, after a long history Rory and Liam are on the verge of parting ways, driven apart by Liam’s refusal to accept Rory’s love as anything more than friendship. Despite their own issues, the men find they cannot refuse her plea for help and together they embark on a training session like no other where the Masters are the ones who learn the true meaning of love and surrender.
I knew this author for quite a while but never read any stories from this series, Club wicked. I discovered after reading this story that a prequel was out, My Wicked Trainers, a short novella, introducing the relationship between the two Doms, Liam and Rory. Sadly no mention of it anywhere, not even with the blurb, not even inside the book! This said, I still liked it and I could read it as a stand alone. But I still feel it does not give the full spotlight on this story as I am sure it would have added an extra emotional layer. I just add that it is the same publisher, Loose Id, so it is not as if it was not possible to be mentioned. Now, it is possible that because the heroine is not the same in both stories, it was decided to keep them apart. Anyway. That is a minor issue but for those who wish to get the full story, you better read My Wicked Trainers first 🙂
Talking about prequels… To be honest, I find totally frustrating to read a prequel of a story published after the story itself. I feel a bit cheated when I find out. Most of the time it is a MM story, how it begun between the two heroes. Because of course the heroine came after in the relationship so her past was somehow irrelevant. I do not read them because they are not menage but each time I feel as if those characters cheated me and the heroine because the author wanted to prove that their MM love was out of the world before they met the heroine and lesser the love between her and them. Silly? Probably. But that the way I feel. I would appreciate so much to have a note at the beginning of the menage story and in the blurb and reference if a prequel is published both later (it is confusing to read/see book #2 after book #3 in the timeline). I cannot believe it would be that difficult to add a mention? Anyway, this is my 2 cennes.
But lets talk about My Wicked Masters.
I have to say that I loved the heroine a little bit better than the heroes. Not that they were not lovable but something was a bit missing for me about them. I believe it was probably because it took a while before I felt the love between all the characters. For a long time it was two simultaneous MF love stories. At first, I did not really understood why the story had two heroes at all. If you think to find a MMF menage. You won’t. Even after reading the epilogue, I will not qualify this story a MMF.
The heroine was very interesting. Many things were attractive to me. First the preconceive physical notion people have about beauty. Second what can hide behind an attitude. It was definitely a character that I wanted to know more and understand. And I did. Ann Mayburn did not disappoint. I particularly liked that even though the heroine was abused in her past, her scars felt true. It was not a quick recovery and I appreciated that the author made it plausible.
It is important for me to connect if the story has a strong romance foundation at first, then the storyline. It was the case with My Wicked Masters. It started with the heroine’s fixation and crush. Her determination to become their submissive was also credible. It was not a quick decision. It was also nice that the heroes took their time too. I am a bit bored with love/lust at first sight and I enjoyed the time and evolution of the relationship.
In my world, a Dom is not a knight in white armor. He is a man that breath confidence and authority to take care of another being. Once He accepts the responsibility, He commits 100%. But before this, it is a matter of test, training, time, limits, understandings, mistakes. Most people do not know the lifestyle and I do not pretend to know it that well. But what I know is that not everyone wish a long term D/s relationship, not everyone wish to include feelings with it.
In My Wicked Masters, I liked the atmosphere of the BDSM club. I liked the secondary characters very much.
This story was the recovery of a woman. It was her journey in the lifestyle.
Do I recommend it? Of course!..
